The Dutch state railroad NS and ProRail (infrastructure) are facing a major challenge at Amsterdam airport station. Due to the extreme increase in passenger numbers, capacity had to be increased with a conversion. This conversion can now take place while the station remains in operation. Alternative measures would have been expensive and inconvenient for travelers. The planners wanted to find a cost-effective solution while ensuring safe passenger flows with the least possible inconvenience for passengers. An innovation from ASE played an important role in this.
ASE developed the Crowd Monitor, whose sensors are mounted on and around the platforms. These sensors measure the flow of people in real time and highlight potential dangers before they arise. Thanks to the intelligent algorithms and the alarm function, the Crowd Monitor can warn station staff of risks before situations become critical. Station staff can then proactively initiate the necessary measures, such as closing access to the relevant platforms or ensuring that passengers are better dispersed. In this way, the Dutch State Railways can guarantee safety at the station and maintain full operations even during the renovation. Because the data collected by the sensors is stored, it can be used to gain further important insights when planning similar projects.
