Make passenger flows and occupancy visible in real time

At InnoTrans 2026, ASE, together with Axis, will demonstrate how passenger flows in stations and vehicle capacity utilization can be measured in real time. The foundation is image analysis from existing cameras that automatically detects, counts, and classifies people and objects.

The new feature is recognition.

Counting data alone show how many people pass a location, not where they come from and where they go next. The analytics create an anonymous signature from visual characteristics and recognize the same person at the next camera; faces, names, and biometric templates are not generated in the process. This makes the travel chain continuously visible, from station access through the platform and train car to the transfer. Operators identify transfer connections, route choices, and dwell times per section, and align routing, signage, connection planning, and service areas with them rather than with assumptions.

Train stations: safety, capacity planning, space management

The same measurement supports three applications.

I'm Operation Does ASE's Crowd Monitor report increasing crowd density before the situation becomes critical? The operator sees where a bottleneck is forming and can regulate access points, redeploy staff, or divert passenger flows.

In the Planning Capacity management shows up to what passenger volume a station can be operated safely and functionally. Expansion steps can thus be justified and scheduled chronologically instead of being estimated.

In the Management provide the same data as a basis for aligning rent levels, tenant mix, and opening hours of retail and service offerings with actual pedestrian traffic. Negotiations with tenants are conducted using measured values rather than empirical estimates.

Public transport: Counting passengers, making occupancy visible

Inside the vehicle, the automatic passenger counting system records the boarding and alighting passengers at each stop according to the specifications of VDV publication 457. The same software detects luggage, strollers, and bicycles, thereby making the occupied space visible, not just the number of people. The values are available in real time and can be fed into the passenger information system, allowing travelers to see where there is still room before boarding.
