Rhaetian Railway RHB checks safety at rail crossings with the help of ASE's AI solution

For the Rhaetian Railway, we measured and calculated the frequency at two level crossings without barriers.

The Rhaetian Railway (RhB) is building a crossing point almost two kilometers long on the St. Moritz-Tirano line. There are three level crossings on this section of line that are only secured with St. Andrew's crosses. As part of the planning approval process, the RhB must prove that the level crossings are still safe.

The federal government stipulates that Swiss level crossings must be secured with barriers, flashing lights or signal boards, depending on the danger situation. The hazardous situation depends on the intensity of road traffic, the way the railroad is operated - especially speed - and visibility conditions.

In the case of the new RhB crossing point, rail operations and visibility conditions allow it to be secured with St. Andrew's crossings. RhB had to prove the intensity of use and commissioned ASE to carry out the corresponding measurements.

Because the level crossings only serve bikers and hikers, there are no permanently installed frequency measuring devices in their vicinity. Instead, we recorded the number of people for two and a half months using a mobile system. The necessary power was supplied by a solar cell and a battery.

The measurements showed that the maximum daily average of eight people per hour is not exceeded. RhB can therefore continue to secure the three level crossings with signs only and can dispense with expensive installations such as warning lights or even an underpass.
