ASE measures, analyses, and forecasts traffic and pedestrian flows. Our goal is to abstract valuable data-driven insights under potentially problematic or complex circumstances. To do this, ASE promotes new technologies that capitalise upon potential insights, all in an effort to contribute in an increasingly networked world. The main challenge facing ASE lies in communicating the complexities of the initial scenario and in conveying the results obtained. It’s only by presenting both in an understandable way that we can effectively meet our customers’ requirements.

To remain at the forefront, ASE participates in studies and research projects at top European universities in order to build networks and continuously learn from leading experts and researchers.

Pedestrian Analytics System

The Pedestrian Analytics System (PAS) is an open and holistic IoT system. It is used to capture and analyse customer flows in transportation, retail, and buildings or public spaces with high traffic. It includes sensor technology, a server platform, data handling, and analytics, as well as numerous applications. Thanks to modern interfaces, data connections between the PAS and other systems are easily established.
PAS is compatible with all sensors and APIs available on the market. It is suitable for real-time applications where inbuilt algorithms enable forecasts and virtual counting by referencing historical or external data sets.

ASE mainly uses video-based 3D stereo sensors for the acquisition of pedestrian data. The 3D sensors cover individual areas of the counting stations and relay this data to a database server.

By continuously considering and testing new sensors from third party suppliers, ASE is always up-to-date. This way we offer the newest and most innovative hardware features and improvements to our clients.

Individual sensors can be combined to provide practically unlimited measuring and recording capability.

When used in counting, routing, and queue control, it enables discernment between groups and associated behaviours. Examples include distinguishing between employees, children, or people of different genders, and additional factors such as viewing direction and whether subjects wear a face mask or not.

The Diamond Reports analysis tool takes on the burden of data processing by integrating multiple data streams into one easy-to-navigate reporting solution. It can be hosted either on-site or in the cloud and is accessible from a variety of mobile-friendly devices. It offers an intuitive user experience with sophisticated customisation options suited to light users and IT/data professionals alike, meaning it’s much more than just a simple presentation layer.

Dynamic Flow Charts generate valuable graphical real-time data for the stakeholders of a building or facility.

Thanks to specially developed algorithms, it displays not only the numbers at individual monitoring points, but also the densities between them. This enables the inference of virtual measuring points without the need for additional hardware. The data can then be displayed and communicated on a floor plan to convey the loads in different parts of the plant at different times of the day.

The Live Forecast module integrates weather, calendar data, events, historical data, and public transport information. It then renders this data in a variety of ways, whether on the Diamond Reports web tool or separately via an API.

Based on historical data, future passenger numbers can be predicted via machine learning algorithms. By identifying typical behavioural patterns and influencing factors, a precise forecast for the coming hours, days, and years ahead can be made. These predictions are integrated directly into our Diamond Reports web tool, where they are rendered in a user-friendly way.

Our team consists of software engineers in Zurich who use the Scrum framework for development tasks. Each of our development iteration cycles focuses on the three key drivers of value creation: customer perspective, market trends, and our intuition.

 

We rely on strong expertise in the design of highly-scalable cloud systems. In order to implement customer requirements quickly and efficiently, we have a well-established in-house software development team. They constantly explore new technologies and work with ASP.Net, MS SQL Server, NodeJs, Go, Python, Postgresql, Apache Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes. Our software team offers services for the entire lifecycle of a system, beginning with the acquisition of requirements through to the deployment and maintenance of the system.

ASE maintains close relationships with the world’s leading research universities and supports the regular mutual exchange of knowledge with academics around the world.
The university is not the only important recruiting channel for new talent at ASE, and it’s for this reason that we expand our circles through a presence at career job fairs.
Scientists are also our valued customers, and ASE’s technologies and data sets have been used in a wide range of published scientific studies. In addition, ASE also conducts its own research and presents the results in scientific journals, at symposia or industry conferences.

Jessica Weibel, MSc. ETH Spatial Development and Infrastructure Systems is a project manager at ASE. She received the VSS Award 2020 for her Masters Thesis on the short-term prediction of platform congestion using supervised machine learning. The VSS article is available in Road and Traffic issue 03/2020 at www.vss.ch.


An Application of New Pedestrian Tracking Sensors for Evaluating Platform Safety Risks at Swiss and Dutch Train Stations (van den Heuvel et al., 2019)

A recently published scientific paper that uses ASE’s technology and proprietary stitching algorithm for a high degree of accuracy “even at the highest complexity” as defined in the study.

ASE supplies measurement systems for the Federal Ministry’s CroMa project

The CroMa project is an initiative funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Through improved building regulations, appropriate crowd management, and cross-organisational implementation guidelines, it aims to achieve greater levels of safety, robustness, and performance in transport hubs for the 36 million passengers who use German public transport every day.

The project is led by prominent research figure Prof. Dr. Armin Seyfried and is based on the ASE technology used at Frankfurt Central Station. More information is available on www.croma-projekt.de
