AI at the SOB ensures increased customer service

Video analysis contributes to more space on the train

The evaluation of existing video images enables Südostbahn to continuously adapt its trains to the needs of travellers.

Like many Swiss railways, Südostbahn (SOB) faces the challenge of catering to diverse passenger demographics, ranging from commuters and day trippers to tourists. The varying needs of each customer segment necessitate flexible arrangements, particularly regarding onboard parking spaces. During peak hours, commuters prioritize ample seating and room for one or two bicycles. Conversely, off-peak times see an influx of passengers with pushchairs and bulky luggage like skis and paragliders. International travelers, meanwhile, require storage space for their heavy suitcases, preferably within sight for added security. Addressing these distinct requirements is crucial for enhancing passenger satisfaction and ensuring a seamless travel experience across all demographics.

In collaboration with Südostbahn (SOB), we have developed an artificial intelligence system capable of accurately identifying and categorizing various types of luggage through surveillance camera footage. This pioneering project is now being rolled out on a large scale by SOB.

Our video analysis system leverages the existing surveillance cameras installed in the trains. The AI operates autonomously on each train, conducting real-time analysis of the video feed and transmitting the outcomes to a central server. Importantly, this analysis is conducted in a fully anonymous manner, adhering to the most stringent data protection standards, both in Switzerland and in the EU.

Up to this point, public transport operators have traditionally relied on installing multiple sensors to count various objects, a method that posed limitations in terms of expandability and had a relatively short hardware life cycle. Our video analysis technology renders this approach obsolete.

The potential benefits for public transport customers are significant. With our technology, existing occupancy forecasts will significantly improve and can now incorporate luggage areas as well. Furthermore, the precise data enables the predictive adjustment of configurable compartments, a feature currently under testing by SOB.

ASE is a pioneer in the field of video analysis and artificial intelligence. We take great pride in our ability to advance public transport through these innovative technologies. In addition to our partnership with SOB, Deutsche Bahn is outfitting up to 100 stations with our system. Moreover, we are conducting another proof of concept for Verkehrsbetriebe Frankfurt. Further collaborations are underway with entities such as the Zurich transport company, the Zentralbahn, and the Rhaetian Railway.
